The Green Party of Canada mourns the death of Pope Francis, recognizing him as a vital ally in the climate action movement.
In his Encyclical Letter, Laudato si, we find a global clarion call to climate action and economic justice grounded in faith and written to all – regardless of religion.
Among his many accomplishments, Pope Francis called for greater compassion in the Vatican’s approach to LGBTQ rights, for peace in Gaza and for human rights in the United States.
“It was a very powerful experience to be present for the Papal apology at the Maskwacis Powwow grounds on July 25, 2022,” said Green Party co-Leader Elizabeth May. “The legacy of this extraordinary Pope, the first ever from Latin America, the birthplace of liberation theology, is far-reaching. As Trump and Putin dominate world headlines, we will miss the voice of a true and compassionate leader who so faithfully served all of the human family.”
