OTTAWA — The Trump administration’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods is nothing short of a declaration of economic war. These tariffs violate the GATT as well as the renegotiated CUSMA (NAFTA) that Trump negotiated in his first term.
“No U.S. President has ever shown such contempt for our treaties and international law, not to mention the century-plus years of friendship and strong mutual support,” said Elizabeth May, Co-Leader of the Green Party of Canada. “Coupled with Trump’s oft-repeated nonsense that he wants to annex Canada and use economic damage to coerce us, it is clear that this is no ordinary trade dispute.”
“Donald Trump’s tariffs are a direct attack on Canada,” said Jonathan Pedneault, Co-Leader of the Green Party of Canada. “They are intended to undermine our economy, create insecurity, and are a direct challenge to our independence. Canada will remain firm and united in the face of economic bullying.”
These tariffs are not only an economic weapon but a clear message that the Trump administration seeks to destabilize Canada and fracture our democratic institutions. The Green Party supports the imposition of counter-tariffs on U.S. imports and calls on all political leaders to unite and take immediate action to counter this aggression, for the sake of Canadian workers, businesses, and our national sovereignty.
“We can and must protect critical resource sectors,” added Elizabeth May. “Counter-tariffs and retaliation are not enough to protect Canadian jobs, but we could better protect all regions of Canada by creating strategic reserves of Canadian raw resources—such as forest products, aluminum, potash, bitumen, and uranium—to increase our economic leverage and clout while ensuring Canadian producers can sell their products. Canadian Crown corporations operating strategic reserves will buttress our economy and allow us to better weather the storms Trump imagines will bring us down.”
On February 26, the Green Party of Canada unveiled a 38-measure plan to Protect Canada, highlighting the threats emanating from the U.S. and how Canada can best stand up to Donald Trump.

We must stand firm, together, to protect the values we hold dear—democracy, freedom, and climate action. This is a challenge we must face head-on.
