Housing
We will make the largest investment in public housing since the 1970s, and clamp down on big investors driving up prices.
Learn MoreMaria Korpijaakko holds a Ph.D. in Education from McGill University, specializing in critical media literacy. Her work focuses on social justice issues related to democracy, news media, social media, misinformation, and climate change.
In 2015, she wrote a book about the social-cultural impacts of Facebook use. Her recent publications have analyzed social media algorithms, the importance of ethical news media for democracy, and the growth of right-wing populism. Maria’s passion for strengthening democracy, improving social equity, and protecting the environment has driven her actions and research.
Maria’s journey into climate activism began with her gardening business 20 years ago when she started noticing the subtle impacts of climate change. By 2019, after reading “The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming,” she understood the extent and urgency of the climate crisis and responded by joining various action groups.
That year, she helped found Saint-Bruno en Transition (SBET), a local NPO that aims to mobilize citizens to create eco-responsible initiatives and build community solidarity. She also joined the Green Party of Canada, believing it was the only federal party taking climate action seriously, and became the official agent for the riding of Montarville and a policy researcher for the riding of Vaudreuil-Soulanges.
Her commitment to climate action continued when she ran for her local city council with Ensemble Saint-Bruno in 2021. While canvassing, she discussed climate change and advocated for protecting local forests and climate-resilient development. Despite their loss, she joined the city’s Environmental Consulting Committee to contribute at the municipal level.
Maria became a David Suzuki Butterfly Ranger in 2022, continuing her dedication to the environment. She educates children and adults about the importance of native plants, pollinators, and insects in ecosystems and food production. She has converted her urban yard into an ecosystem, making it a hub for insects, animals, and neighbours—even the local daycare stops by for visits.
Maria strives to inspire others while raising awareness about climate change and the fragility of democracy and social equity. She firmly believes that civil dialogue and scientific knowledge are essential to achieving these goals.
