Dr. Sarun Balaranjan (he/him) is running for the Green Party of Canada because he believes in advancing equitable, evidence-based solutions to the pressing environmental and health challenges of our time. He grew up in Rexdale, Toronto, as the child of Tamil refugees, and has seen firsthand how systemic inequities impact both access to healthcare and the role of environmental racism in Canadian communities. He is currently completing his residency training and hopes to utilize his role as a community physician to continue advocating for a just, sustainable future.

He completed an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree in Arts and Science with a minor in Sustainability at McMaster University in 2022, followed by  medical training at McMaster University’s  Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine in 2025. He has engaged in community-focused advocacy at this time as the President of OPIRG McMaster, a non-profit which fostered grassroots initiatives to address environmental and social justice issues. He has worked with the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE)  to promote health equity and environmental sustainability and has contributed to planetary health education through the Canadian Federation of Medical Students’ Health and Environment Adaptive Response Task Force.

His riding of North Etobicoke faces disproportionate environmental health impacts due to industrial pollution, which adversely affects its immigrant and racialized populations. He is motivated to advocate for policies that tackle environmental inequities, improve air quality, and ensure a healthier future for all. He recognizes the importance of using his platform to  highlight the connection between Canada’s climate policies and their impact on the Global South, where many residents of North Etobicoke have family ties. He is committed to ensuring that Canada’s climate action is bold, inclusive, and aligned with the Green Party’s principles of sustainability and justice.
